How to force Outlook to use pop-before-smtp authentication?

Please follow the steps listed below.

  1. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
  2. If View or change existing e-mail accounts is not already selected, click View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
  3. Click on your WebHostForASP mail account, and then click Change.
  4. In the Internet E-mail Settings (POP3) dialog box, click More Settings.
  5. Click to select the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication check box.
  6. Ensure that Log on to incoming mail server before sending mail is selected. This assumes that you have told Outlook that your account is a POP3 account, instead of IMAP. If IMAP is used, the radiobutton will not be there - please see below for workaround.
  7. Click OK, click Next, and then click Finish.
  8. Quit and restart Outlook before you send mail.

You can then continue to use Outlook Express as you regularly would.

For Outlook using IMAP:
a. The workaround is to ensure that Outlook is schedules to send and receive mail every n minutes, with n < 30 minutes.
b. By default, Outlook is not configured to send/receive every n minutes. You must configure this.
c. Go to: Tools | Send/REceive Settings | Define Send/Receive Groups
d. Select "All Accounts"
e. Use the checkbox: Schedule an automatic send/receive every n minutes

More Information
This setting configures Outlook to re-authenticate to your POP or IMAP account, which authenticates your access to our SMTP server.
